However, the dos<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">e <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">distribution<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">delivered during<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">particle<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">therapy<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is quite sensitive to anatomical changes in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the patient,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">particle<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">range uncertainties and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">patient setup<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">errors.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Because of this, s<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">everal <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">techniques for in<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">vivo dose delivery verification have and are being developed.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The most <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">investigated method is positron emission tomography (PET) of the positron emitters that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">are created by the particles via nuclear reactions in the patient. The P<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ET signal is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">obviously delayed by the radioactive decay half<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">life. For most positron emitters this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">precludes real<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">time feedback and leaves room for biological washout. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">I will report on investigations towards real<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">time verification using PET during proton, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">helium ion and heavy ion therapy. At the University Medical Center Groningen, w<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">e are <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">investigatin<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">g<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">imaging<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">12<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">N<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">, with a half<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">life of just 11<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ms,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">produced by the proton<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">helium<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">beam in the patient. I will report on recent<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">proof<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">principle demonstratio<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ns<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the range accuracy in homogeneous targets, and discuss our present research to<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">establish the clinical relevance on the basis of irradiations of an anthropomorphic head <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">phantom.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Treatment with positron emitting radioactive<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">heavy ions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">gives a much stro<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nger <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">PET signal which is more closely correlated to the Bragg peak compared to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">treatment <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">stable heavy ions. Within the BARB project at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">f\u00fcr <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Schwerionenforschun<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">g<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">, we have investigated the precision with which the range of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">10,11<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">C <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">14,15<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">O can be measured<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">using PET<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.
